Introduction of hard rock and placer deposits
of Almandine type Garnet of Altankhudag area

The Altankhudag Almandine type of Garnet deposit is located 1160 km south west from Ulaanbaatar, 160 km south from Gobi-Altai aimag (province), 7 km south east from Tseel Soum (Figure1). GBM owns 100% interest of Altankhudag license since 2005 and is conducting exploration work. (Figure 1)

Figure 1.

The deposit was first discovered in 1968 and since then, the prospecting work has been successfully executed. In 1978-1986, “Zoos Goyol” state-owned plant has been mining the deposit for jewelry products and exported its poducts to then-called Czechoslvakia and Hungary. (Figure 2)

(Figure 2)

In 1986-1988, an expedition headed by T.Namsrai, successfully completed a prospecting in placer deposit (report 4236) and found out that it has a reserve of 38 tons of Garnet of B+C category including 832 kg of jewelry Almandine that accommodates industrial requirement fully. Also the expedition made conclusion that the reserve of the hard rock deposit will possibly increase as it goe deeper. The Almandine occurs raisin-like red, semi-transparent red coloured, flawless, right-shaped crystal, with the size of more than 3mm, which attracts so much interest in jewelry industry.

In 2006, GBM geologists visited site for exploration-evaluation purpose in September to successfully complete a prospecting in placer and hard rock deposits and estimated that it has a placer reserve of 30 tons and a hard rock reserve of 160 thousand tons of Garnet-Almandine of C1 category. During the exploration trip there was discovered unnamed occurence rich in (60-80%) of Garnet-Almandine at the site (Figure 6).
Regarding the infrastructure of the deposit, a new hydroelectric power station of Taishir will be opened in 2007 and then, Tseel soum will be fully supplied with reliable electricity. Also a regular Bichigt border port at the Mongolian-Chinese border locates and works at 170 km in southeast from the deposit.

The geological formation of the deposit sits at southern area of Mongol-Altai mountain ranges and east part of the Bichigt metamorphic series, and the Garnetized metamorphic rock, which sits at the north of Bulgan major fault creates a dyke-lenticular-shaped body trending towards north-east. Garnetized body is composed of various sheeting gniesses including biotite garnet, biotite-mica garnet (70-80% garnet), garnet-bearing quartz-feldspar-biotite-mica, biotite-amphibolite, garnet-fibrolite (30-40% garnet) which basically forms placer deposit (Figure 5).

(Figure 3).

(Figure 4).

The width of the body is 2-10 m, length 400 m, trending is by 3X50’ and the dip dir is 40-50/70-80 (Figure 2.3). Garnet occurs in different sizes and the grain size ranges from 0.1-5mm, 5-10mm, 10-50mm and occasionally up to 100mm. The Garnet occurs in transparent red, dark brown, brownish red, dark purplish-red colour, in forms of right-shaped dodecahedrons, round dodecahedrons, massive, detritus and modulus 7-7.8 hardness (Figure 7). The Altankhudag Garnet-Almandine is very suitable for jewelry, sandblasting, textile blasting (jeans so on), water filtration, concrete floor finishingproduct, glass and tube plasting, water jet cutting and for various other usages.

We are ready to collaborate by everything subjects and participate with foreign and local investors for interesting our Anar-Almendine coalfield.
